The Role of Synthetic Sulfonates in Metalworking Fluids

Metalworking fluids are complex formulations that are required to provide lubrication and protection from corrosion to metal parts during manufacturing and drilling. Within these fluids, synthetic sulfonates are workhorse components that provide a myriad of sought-after benefits depending on your formulation type (soluble oil, semi-synthetic, or synthetic).

Emulsification & Stability
Sulfonates help disperse oil into water, forming stable emulsions. They also help prevent “creaming” and phase separation by keeping MWF formulations uniform during storage and use. This is essential for consistent lubrication.

Corrosion Protection
Synthetic sulfonates form a hydrophobic barrier on metal that resists water penetration and oxidation. Some sulfonates can also buffer against acidic by-products from machining or microbial activity.

Detergency & Cleanliness Sulfonates help break down and carry away tramp oil, fines, and residues from the metal surface. This reduces sticky residue and sludge from forming, which help improve fluid and machine life. They are also less likely to precipitate with calcium and magnesium, helping avoid soap scum deposits.

Foam Control Depending on the molecular weight and structure, some synthetic sulfonates can aid in foam reduction in high agitation operations. This supports efficient pumping and cooling.

Consistency & Cost Efficiency Unlike natural sulfonates, synthetic sulfonates are specifically engineered to a molecular structure, so key performance parameters–emulsification index, acid number, active matter, etc.–are reproducible. With natural sulfonates, the refining process can cause variation in performance from batch-to-batch. The consistency by which synthetic sulfonates are produced allows formulators and manufacturers of MWF to minimize potential performance issues and maintain quality control, leading to more reliable formulations and less need for reformulation. In other words, Synthetic sulfonates help you make the same high-performing metalworking fluids every time.
