Primarily used as a nutritional supplement to treat type-2 diabetes and to promote weight loss. Bright red in color, this compound is derived from picolinic acid and chromium. Only small quantities of chromium are needed by those with normal health for use of glucose via insulin, but deficiency is rare and has only been documented in observations of long-term hospital patients with strictly defined diets. However, research does show that chromium does help regulate insulin by increasing the sensitivity of insulin receptors. Due this evidence, chromium picolinate has been used as a treatment for type-2 diabetes, but its specific, measurable effectiveness remains a topic of debate due to conflicting information and the low quality of the current clinical studies on record. Thus, it is considered to be merely a nutritional supplement and not an actual medication for treating type-2 diabetes at this time.
