Commonly called cetane, hexadecane is an alkaline hydrocarbon typically found in diesel fuel as one of the primary igniting agents. Industrially, hexadecane is used as an adsorbent and absorbent for liquids, chemicals, and organic compounds in order to absorb or solidify them for cleanup. It is also used as a fuel additive, and in the production of textile, fabrics, and leather finishing. It is not toxic to humans in lower concentrations, and is typically encountered as an additive or key ingredient in spill absorbents and adsorbents in industrial and commercial settings.
