The shorthand name for propylene glycol monomethyl ether, PM solvent is used in numerous industrial and commercial applications. A medium-boiling glycol ether, PM solvent is effective as a solvent for cellulose, nitrocellulose, epoxy, acrylic, and alkyd resins. Most PM solvent is used in the manufacture of coatings, printing ink, and various cleaning solutions. Coatings containing PM solvent can be found in the automotive industry, consumer electronics, electrical equipment, and industrial equipment. It is also a key ingredient in household cleaners, industrial cleaning solutions, and metal processing. The food industry uses PM solvent in limited amounts as an insecticide, fungicide, and rodenticide in specific applications as approved by Federal authority. Commercially, PM solvent is often used as a paint stripper, and is also used in small quantities in manufacturing certain fragrances.Certain wood products are also treated with solutions containing PM solvent as well due to its antifungal, insecticide properties.
