An aromatic dicarboxylic acid synthesized from the oxidation of p-xylene, is used to produce polyester fibers, polybutylene terephthalate and other engineering polymers. The largest use of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) is the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which is used to produce bottle resin for packaging purposes and fiber for apparel, followed by PTA in coating and composite materials.
