Xylene AR is the trade name for sulfur-free reagent grade xylol, also known as dimethylbenzene. The term xylenes refers to the combination of the three different dimethylbenzene compounds found in the different varieties of xylol. All xylenes are colorless, flammable liquids that possess significant industrial value in various applications. In petrochemical manufacturing, xylenes are produced via catalytic reforming, as well as from coal carbonization process used to manufacture coke fuel. Xylenes are also found in crude oil in very small concentrations of 1 percent or less. Produced as part of the BTX aromatics group of solvents (benzene, toluene, and xylene). Most xylenes are slightly greasy and colorless in liquid form. These laboratory grade xylenes are produced via the methylation of toluene and benzene, usually in 40-65 percent concentrations of m-xylene and 20 percent concentrations of o-xylene, p-xylene, and ethylbenzene. Of these three xylenes, p-xylene is the most highly prized due to its numerous industrial applications.
