Pigments for Compostable Products – U.S. Compost Council Compliant

The effective composting of polymer products after their service lives is an important prong in the multifaceted solution required to address the issue of plastic waste globally.

For a discarded polymer article to classify as “compostable," the U.S. Compost Council mandates low loadings of certain metals that are common in inorganic pigments, such as zinc, nickel, and copper.

Tomatec recently introduced a full palette of pigments that allow formulators to meet U.S. Compost Council requirements, as well as other programs around the world:
• "Kompostierbar" DIN CERTCO / IBAW (Germany)
• "GreenPla" JBPA (Japan)

New Laser Marking Pigment with Outstanding Contrast

Commercial solutions for laser marking often rely on expensive and cumbersome ink-based systems. Among the simpler pigment solutions that are delivered via masterbatch, many materials simply promote the charring of the polymer matrix as their chief coloration mechanism upon exposure to the appropriate laser wavelength. Tomatec 42-920A functions by both promoting matrix charring, as well as the pigment itself changing color, when exposed to a Nd:YAG laser. This dual mechanism allows for crisp, highly detailed, dark colored markings while still keeping the unexposed polymer matrix neutral in color.

Laser marking pigments have a wide variety of applications and benefits:
• Product traceability
• Print part numbers, dates of manufacture, lot numbers, etc.
• Print operating instructions
• Prevent forgeries, especially in high-value or health-sensitive products
• Electronics
• Cosmetics
• Medicine/Cannabis Product Packaging
• Easier and cheaper to use than ink-based systems
• Allows for high-speed marking: 1000-2000 mm/s
